Journal Jars
Journal Jars are a great way to get kids to write.
********************************************************
It gives them prompts such as:
~Do you have aunts and uncles, tell us about each one.
~Do you have your own room or share a room with someone? What do you like about your room?
~If I could change any part of myself, what would it be?
~Clip a news article that is big news today, tape it in the journal and tell us something about it.
I did this with my kids when they were little and we made new one's because they are older and needed older kid type writing prompts.
You can find websites that offer prompts or think of them on your own. Just type them or hand write them, cut them into strips of paper and put them in a canning jar. Decorate the jar. My kids made really cute one's when they were little, and painted the jars and all, but we have moved on to older kids and well, they aren't interested in the decoration of the jar anymore so I just put a piece of cloth in the lid to make it look a little nicer.
Everyday, you have your child choose a prompt (and you can too, we should all keep a journal) and if they don't feel its something they want to write about, they are free to throw it back in and choose another one. Everyone can use the same slip of paper or chose their own. Here is a cute little poem you could attach.
"Preserve your memories - seal them up well.
What you forget, you can never retell.
But a journal that's kept fresh on the shelf
Will help someone through rough times -
Maybe even yourself!"
